Komura was reassigned his post after handling a variety of intricate issues, including restarting the Maritime Self-Defense Force's refueling mission in the Indian Ocean as well as reaching a historic agreement with China to jointly develop disputed gas fields in the East China Sea.
He has been involved in foreign policy for more than a decade and first served as foreign minister in the Keizo Obuchi Cabinet starting in 1998. He is known for strong ties with China's political circles.
A graduate of Chuo University in Tokyo, Komura followed in his father's steps to enter politics after passing the national bar exam. He has served as defense and justice ministers in the past and leads a small LDP faction.
He ran for LDP president in 2003 but was defeated by Junichiro Koizumi.
