A holdover from the previous Cabinet, Masuzoe spearheaded the handling of the pension-records scandal and hepatitis C lawsuits against the state. He made a name for himself with his tough approach to embezzling bureaucrats, which gained him plenty of media coverage and public support.
The former assistant professor at the University of Tokyo first won a Diet seat in 2001 with the largest number of ballots in the national proportional representation section of the House of Councilors. He is an advocate of constitutional amendment and is a member of the Liberal Democratic Party's panel to draw up a new Constitution.
Prior to becoming a lawmaker, Masuzoe gained fame as a political analyst and TV commentator.
